The Museum’s collections were begun by Torquay Natural History Society (TNHS) which was founded in 1844. Less than a year later the society decided to establish a museum with the primary objective of illustrating the natural history of Devon. The collections were housed in several temporary locations before it was decided that a permanent purpose built museum was needed. In 1876 the current building was complete
The museum offers a unique location for conferences, meetings and events and has a choice of 3 rooms to meet a wide range of needs; from a small boardroom meeting to an auditorium seating 190 with high spec presentation facilities
If you are planning an evening event, the museum’s exhibition galleries can be hired for exclusive use, allowing you to create an event with a difference – from champagne receptions in the Devon Farmhouse or Explorers Gallery,to intimate dining in the Forbes-Julian Room or the Library.
